Portable Sensory Boards

Four portable sensory boards for memory-care residents at Dulles Health & Rehab Center. I planned them, led a one-day build by twelve people, and handed them to the facility.

One of the four boards, put together part by part: an animation made from our photograph of the finished boards.

The design

Each board has activities a resident can do with their hands. A staff member can carry it to them. That is why I chose four small boards instead of one permanent installation.

I chose the hardware and textured materials.

Preparation

I organized the volunteers and explained how to work safely. Then I gave each person a work station and a job.

The build

Twelve people shared one power drill. People had to wait for it to fasten parts to the boards. I kept the drill moving between boards and assigned other tasks to people who were waiting.

Some attachments we had planned to glue were not secure enough to withstand pulling. We added screws to secure them.
